PROYECTO ESPECIAL CHIRA-PIURA

Mediante D.L. Nº 17463 DEL 25.02.69 se declaró de necesidad y utilidad pública la utilización de los recursos hídricos de las cuencas, ríos y valles del departamento de Piura y se dispone la ejecución integral del proyecto Chira - Piura.

El Proyecto Chira-Piura, fue concebido para efectuar explotación racional de los recursos agua y tierra del Departamento de Piura, los cuales no se explotaban completamente. Mientras que en valle del Medio y Bajo Piura, con excelentes suelos, su desarrollo agrícola se reducía paulatinamente por falta de agua, en el valle del Chira, con abundante abastecimiento de agua, las tierras agrícolas eran limitadas por los altos costos del bombeo. Este natural desequilibrio de asignación de recursos, se planeo corregir a través de la ejecución del Plan Integral para el desarrollo de las Cuencas Chira - Piura, donde los caudales excedentes del río Chira, serían almacenados en un reservorio (Poechos), y derivados al valle de Piura a través de un canal de derivación.

También se contempló la rehabilitación de los valles del Bajo Piura y Chira, y la construcción de diques de defensas para evitar los altos riesgos de inundaciones.

Debido a la magnitud de las obras de inversión a realizarse, el Proyecto Chira - Piura se planificó ejecutar en tres etapas: la I y la II Etapas se han concluido. La tercera Etapa fue autorizada, se venía ejecutando y finalmente paralizada por el gobierno de Alberto Fujimori, hasta que con el proyecto de “Rehabilitación del Valle del Chira”, el actual gobierno ha autorizado su ejecución mediante decreto firmado el 25 de febrero de 2002.
